Bottle of Emotions for Valentine’s Day

I can’t remember a single Valentine’s Day where I haven’t been emotional. And it has nothing to do with my marriage or my life today in general. My husband and I are deeply in love and crazy about each other, so it’s good from that perspective.

It goes back to my childhood. Truth is, I saw happy couples in love, strong marriages, incredible bonds between fathers and daughters, beautiful stuff. But my parents were not in love, abuse filled my home, and I longed to have a daddy who would bring me a Valentine or take me on a special date.

I searched for significance from the opposite sex, and it would last for awhile, only to turn out empty (or worse) in the end. I found fulfillment from friendships, as long as we were all getting along on any given day. Even in the best of my relationships, I would still feel a lonely and desperate void that couldn’t be satisfied.

But that leads me to why Valentine’s Day is an emotional day for me. While many others are elated or sad or confused or mad about the relationships in their lives on this day, just as I used to be, I can’t help but think of how deeply my Father in heaven loves me. It took me years to grasp and fully accept His love for me. I’m so undeserving. But He reached out, scooped me up, brought me to Himself and never let me go. It comforts me to know that the Lord was with me through every past broken earthly relationship, through every childhood tear and fear. He never once hurt, abandoned or rejected me…never has and never will…and that fact, my friends, brings me to grateful tears. Brokenness. Unspeakable joy.

Have you reflected on how deeply Jesus loves you? What about how deeply you love Him? If not, there’s no better day than today.

Happy Valentine’s Day. May the love of Jesus fill your heart, mind & soul, every nook ‘n cranny of your past, present & future as you trust Him.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1

Ephesians 3:16-19 (NLT)
“I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”
