It’s a First for Me…

Since 2005, God has led me to a theme Scripture verse instead of a resolution to focus on for the fresh start of a new year. It excites me to go back and revisit all of them while remembering the transformation that God did according to His Truth.

In 2005, it was Psalm 119:29: “Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing Your instructions.” (NLT)

2006–1st Thessalonians 5:24: “The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (NIV)

2007–John 10:10: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (NIV)

2008–Psalm 40:1-3: “I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me & heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.” (NIV)

2009–Psalm 86:11: “Teach me Your way, O LORD, and I will walk in Your Truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name.” (NIV)

2010–2 Timothy 1:7: “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” (NIV)

I wish I had time to go through each one of these and all that transpired through those years, how God used His Word to sanctify me through and through…

Instead I’ll take the time to share the 2011 verse God has laid on my heart to intentionally integrate into my life. It is Romans 12:11-12a:

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

I believe He confirmed this verse for me personally because He wants me to focus in on 3 words: passion, perseverance and prayer. I’m ecstatic to think how He is going to use this Truth in my life in a powerful way.

And speaking of power, I have one more thing to announce. It’s a first for me…God led me to choose a verse specifically for for 2011 too. Patty over at has been doing this for a few years, and since I was having a difficult time deciding between 2 verses for 2011, God finally made it clear to me! One was for this ministry, and the other was for my personal spiritual growth! And it goes right along with the focus on sharing more and teaching less from my last post.

Excited to know what it is? Well, here’s a picture of it (another idea stolen from Patty):

This is a verse I’ve long clung to, but in my next post I’ll tell you why I think the Lord is leading me to adopt it for ministry purposes this year.

I love it when God does something new…has God had any “firsts” for you lately?

Oh, I LOVE both of these verses. Romans 12:12 is an absolutely favorite verse of mine – and I LOVE the idea of a ministry verse. (and my first from God was my tech fast.)

Praying all God has for you this year will be discovered, rejoiced in, and used for His glory and purpose!

When God brings a scripture to me, I often place it on my frig. or at my desk for a few days. I love this idea of a theme scripture for each year–it’s like dedicating the year to God.

Wow, Laura! I love the verse God put on your heart for this year.

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

This is the person I ‘see’ who cheers me on; who prays for me faithfully; and who speaks into my life things I might not necessarily want to hear at the time but know it’s the truth. Love you, Laura. Thank you for being so faithful to God and listening to His voice.

I feel the same way, Matt, though I don’t get by blogs as often as I used to. That’s another thing I plan to change this year, and yours is at the top of my visit list. Thanks for your encouragement.
