Unsettled, Part 2

As promised, I mentioned in my last post that the theme of Jesus Christ as the only Way, Truth & Life has unsettled me. Not because I don’t believe it…quite the contrary. But because more than ever I think it’s important to remind ourselves, as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ of the significance and urgency of this message.

Over and over, I continue to come across outright heresies and false teachings on the internet via twitter, Facebook and blogs. For more than two weeks, I’ve pondered what God would have me write. I’ve spent the last week poring over God’s Word and researching the topic in great depth, and in that time, I’ve had Truth-sharing and Faith-filled living friends slandered, falsely accused, attacked on the most disgusting levels.

And this is the passage in Colossians 2 that started my unsettling (vs. 1-10, emphasis mine):

“I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”

If possible, read the passage again. What jumps out at you?

I’m going to share with you the TWO parts that caught my attention first.

First, “in Christ.” Notice how many times that is repeated? If a teaching takes my focus off of Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth & the Life, it’s false. Period. If anyone adds to that message or deletes from it, it’s false.

Second, “See to it that no one takes you captive…” This is of major significance. We are responsible to know the Truth, to test what others tell us, whether friend, leader or foe, and compare it to God’s Word. False teachings, legalism, faith based on human tradition,  heresies, partial Truth mixed with rubbish, self-help solutions, Christian principles aligned with other gods or atheists….on and on…we’re responsible to know how the Truth compares to these messages.

Readers, commit to me two things: Pray and spend time in God’s Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the Truth to you as you pray and read and study. Especially on this subject. I commit to do the same, as if I had a choice, ‘cuz it won’t leave me alone.

So I’m veering away from journal/sharing style for just a little while to cover what the Lord is teaching me (and I’m sure I don’t even know the half of it yet)…I’ll go until the Holy Spirit leads me to stop. Stay tuned, please pray how God would have you respond to what you learn from His Word, which I will share from my blog, as well as refer you to other Truth-telling teachers on the subject.

Since I’ve been doing the B90x these 71 days, I’ve developed such a thirst to be reading even more, studying even more. It’s like the more water you drink, the thirstier you are. I remember people saying the OT isn’t relevant for today yet as I’ve read the OT so quickly and now into the NEW, I’m seeing better how the OT is intertwined into the NT. You must read the OT to truly understand the New.

I can’t help but share what God’s been speaking to me from the Bible. It is living and active and I always am exactly where I should be in it for where I am in life or where I need to be so I can share with others. It’s just amazing.

  2. LauraLee, this is dead-on. I am anxious to read your future posts. You remind me of something I have heard before- If you are not in a battle, you are doing something wrong.

  3. Excellent encouragement during this time in which we are to see “a great falling away”. We need to beware of “doctrines” that men with “itchy ears” will follow and stick to His truth and His Word. Good article!

  4. Great message and biblically right on. Every teaching or message or comment should lead you TO Christ and his glory. I write a blog and I am deeply saddened at the number of “Christian” writers who are now encouraging people to leave the church system. While it is true that many churches have failed miserably, I cannot agree with those who profess that the true way to spirituality and closeness to Christ is to leave the church system entirely and go it alone. Since Christ annointed Shepherds to lead his flock, I believe this is a tactic of the enemy to lead believers astray.

And the closer something is to the Truth, without being the Truth, the easier it is to be deceived.

Yes, the OT is SOOO relevant! Jesus is all in and through it! So happy you re hungry for Him. It spurs me on!

Thanks. Pray for me, that I may speak all Truth, boldly, yet lovingly with pure motives compelled by His grace alone. I appreciate your encouragement, Paula!

Thanks for adding that, Marijo. I’m glad you came by!

Wow, that is so true. So sad too. I really appreciate your sharing that. I hope to get by your blog one day soon. Thanks for stopping by.

Oh Lisa, that is so SO true. HOnestly, I have been deceived more than I care to admit, and it is usually with the little bitty acceptable human wisdom that creeps into our society. Thanks for pointing that out!

  11. A teaching we need, sister, even myself. I never want to stray from Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Indeed, my faith has been strongly tested in recent months; it’s been hard to stay fully grounded in what I know to be true because the emotions have been so strong… so debilitating at times. I hope to never stray my readers from God’s truth. I want to honor Him with my words. We need to keep alert and grounded in truth. We need to educate ourselves with God. Then and only then will we be able to handle the word of God correctly.

    Keep to it.
